Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS): Using various battery chemistries (Li-ion - NMC, LFP; Lead-Acid; Flow Batteries, etc.).
Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS): Uses gravity and water.
Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES): Stores energy as compressed air.
Flywheel Energy Storage: Stores energy as rotational kinetic energy.
Thermal Energy Storage (TES): Stores energy as heat (e.g., molten salt, ice).
Hydrogen Storage: Electrolyzes water to store energy as hydrogen gas.
Supercapacitors: Store energy electrostatically, for very fast discharge/charge cycles.
The ATESS systems adopt BESS technology.
A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is an integrated system that captures electrical energy (usually from the grid or renewable sources like solar), stores it in rechargeable batteries, and discharges it to provide electricity when needed. Key components include the battery modules/packs, a Battery Management System (BMS), a power conversion system (PCS - inverter/charger like a hybrid or battery inverter), and control/energy management systems.
Residential: Store solar energy, self-consumption, backup power, load shifting.
Commercial & Industrial (C&I): Peak shaving, demand charge reduction, backup power, renewables integration.
Utility-Scale: Grid stabilization (frequency regulation, voltage support), renewable energy time-shifting (store excess wind/solar), transmission & distribution upgrade deferral, black start capability.
The energy storage battery is the core component that physically stores electrical energy (in chemical form) for later use. Its role is to store excess energy (e.g., from solar or off-peak grid) and release it when needed (e.g., at night, during peak times, or during outages).
The battery inverter cannot function without a battery because its main purpose is to convert the direct current from the battery into alternating current for use by the load.
Charging (AC to DC or DC to DC): Takes AC electricity (coming either from the grid or from the AC output of a separate solar inverter) and converts it to DC electricity to charge the connected batteries.Charge batteries through solar charger controller.
Discharging (DC to AC): Takes DC electricity from the connected batteries and converts it to AC electricity to power loads or feed back to the grid.
1.Enables Energy Storage: Allows you to add battery storage to an existing solar system (AC coupling).
2.Backup Power: Provides power during grid outages.
3.Load Shifting: Store grid or solar power when cheap/available, use it when expensive/needed.
4.Grid Suppport: Can potentially provide grid support functions (frequency regulation, peak shaving).
A device dedicated to controlling the charging and discharging of a battery energy storage system (BESS), converting between battery DC power and usable AC power for the load or grid.
